Taking control

I'm no macro photographer, at least not yet, but current circumstances - and common sense - are keeping me at home and I need something to photograph.

For some time now I've had my eye on a new macro lens, and earlier in the year had given some serious thought about taking the discipline more seriously. But outdoor activities are restricted at the moment, and may be for some months to come. That significant financial outlay to equip myself may well have to wait.

Undaunted, I'm into the garden with what I already have, attempting to photograph the blossom on my plum tree. It's a cloudless spring day with little wind, but results are less than acceptable. The slightest movement of my subject ruins the image and I quickly realise I need to move inside.

It's here where I start to have more success, using natural light from the window, and a touch of fill-in flash to give the shadows a bit of detail. The type of photography I have in mind doesn't require much space, and getting good results is less frustrating in a controlled environment. This could be what I'm looking for!

Now, where did I see the review of that Irix lens?...

As and when

As the UK government ramps up restrictions in response to coronavirus some areas are taking on the feel of a ghost town. Whilst the country is still short of a total lockdown, today may well be my last forage into the wild, so to speak, for some time.

The devil is in the detail

With coronavirus on a world-wide rampage, and social distancing the order of the day, it may seem that photographic opportunities will be put on hold for the forseeable future. Of course, travel restrictions will prevent this to a large degree, but there are opportunites to make interesting photographs - but on a smaller scale.

Outdoor exercise is not regulated in the UK... at least not yet, and taking a walk along the seafront on an overcast afternoon throws up plenty of subject matter if I take the trouble to look, as with this small section of weathered board on a beach hut.

Inuit and seal

The sculpture by Bill Woodrow on Folkestone's sea front portrays the exploitation of fossil fuels and their impact on climate change. The Inuit and seal that tops the work represent an ancient way of life, but now on thin ice that is fast disappearing.

Here is shown just a detail of the work.

Friday the 13th

No matter what the weather conditions are when I visit Dungeness on the Kent coast, I always feel that the images I take should be rendered in black and white.

Mother Sillar's Channel

Stanpit Marsh - formed by the confluence of the Dorset Stour and Hampshire Avon - apart from being a designated nature reserve, boasts the prototype Bailey Bridge. It is from this structure that I take the photograph of Christchurch Priory, overlooking Mother Sillar's Channel.
